Born in London England June 1936. Spent the six WW2 years from ’39- ’45 in rural Ireland. Returned to London in 1945. During that time due to the war time scarcity of all petroleum products, in what must now be a rarity grew up in virtually automobile and electricity free surroundings Went to school in England and though it is unfashionable to say so now, I mostly enjoyed those boarding school years. Always interest in sports still kayak and cross country ski regularly.
In 1954 went to Trinity College Dublin and graduated in 1961 BA MB (Irish MD equivalent). Subsequently worked as a general practitioner (family doctor) in various locations as far a field as Aran Islands off the West Coast of Ireland to London England, from Manitoba, to the Yukon and Cape Breton.
Took up Psychiatry in 1972 and remained in that field until retirement in 2003.
Immigrated to Canada twice the first in July 1965 and again 1975. Since returning to Canada in I975, have lived in Nova Scotia, more than half of that time in Cape Breton. Married with three children and two grand children.
A founder member of the Bras d’Or Stewardship Society formed to ‘Protect Conserve and Restore the Bras d’Or Lakes’. Have served on the Society’s Board since its inception in 1997.
Jointly with a friend Henry Fuller purchased a tract of land of 190 acres at Birch Pt on the Bras d’Or Lakes. Using that helped to lever the NS Department of the Environment into making amendments to the Special Places Protection Act. As a result private landowners can now get a NS Nature Preservation designation on their properties if the properties are judged suitable.
Over the years I have been involved in a number of other activities of a communal nature.
